The Federal Government of Nigeria ordered the closure of 41 unity colleges on Friday, November 21, 2025, across several states mainly in the North West, North East and North Central regions, because of rising cases of student abductions and growing security threats, and the decision was carried out through an official directive sent to school principals to stop activities immediately.

The decision followed fresh attacks on schools in parts of the country, including the recent kidnapping of students from a school in Kebbi State where the vice-principal was killed, and another mass abduction of students from a school in Niger State. Authorities said the shutdown was aimed at preventing further attacks and protecting the lives of students and staff in the affected institutions.

A circular issued by the Director of Senior Secondary Education instructed all principals of the affected unity colleges to comply without delay and ensure students vacate the school premises as quickly as possible. The list of closed schools includes federal government colleges, federal government girls’ colleges and federal technical colleges located in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Abuja and other areas.

Most of the schools affected by the order are located in regions that have recorded repeated cases of bandit attacks, kidnappings and armed invasions of learning institutions in recent weeks. The government’s move was aimed at reducing the risk of further violence while security agencies work to improve safety around schools.
The closures came amid growing concern from parents and communities over the safety of students in boarding schools, as repeated attacks have continued to disrupt education and threaten lives across several northern states.
