The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Wednesday to determine the union’s next steps following the conclusion of talks with the Federal Government. The discussions were led by a renegotiation committee headed by Yayale Ahmed and aimed at resolving longstanding disputes with the union.

The government reconvened the negotiations on Monday in a final attempt to prevent another ASUU strike. Sources within the union say the meeting, which started on Monday, is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, after which the NEC will review the outcomes and decide on further action.

ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government ended on Saturday, increasing tensions across public universities. The union has long accused the government of not fully meeting its demands, which include revising the 2009 agreement between ASUU and the government, clearing unpaid salaries and allowances, and releasing funds for university revitalization.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who is currently out of the country, maintains that the government has met most of ASUU’s requirements. The government continues to urge that no strike should occur, stressing that efforts are ongoing to keep students in school.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has expressed support for ASUU and warned it would stand with academic staff if the government fails to address the union’s concerns.
The NEC meeting on Wednesday will be closely watched, as it will determine whether the union calls off the strike or proceeds with industrial action.
