The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday warned that he and other founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party would not allow individuals who joined the party from other political platforms to weaken its structure. He spoke during the 104th National Executive Committee meeting held at his official residence in Abuja.

Wike accused a faction of the party of going against court rulings by holding a separate convention despite two judgments of the Federal High Court on the matter. He said the faction ignored these rulings and then sought an ex-parte order from a State High Court, an action he described as an attempt to set aside lawful decisions. He noted that the group later returned to court to seek recognition after first acting outside legal procedures, a move he said could damage the party’s image.

The minister insisted that a political party hoping to win public trust must respect its own rules and court decisions. He said the PDP, which has existed since 1998, must be protected from actions driven by personal ambition. Wike urged party leaders and members to follow lawful leadership, obey court orders, and support efforts to rebuild the party.

During the meeting, the Board of Trustees chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, called on the National Executive Committee to set up a Caretaker Committee as the tenure of the current National Working Committee ends on Monday. He said the proposal agrees with the party’s constitution and is aimed at maintaining continuity and order.
Ohuabunwa explained that the party is already putting caretaker teams in place in some states and zones where congresses could not take place earlier, including Anambra and the South-East. He said these steps are intended to prevent leadership gaps, restore unity, and keep the party steady as internal reforms continue.
