The Supreme Court has overturned the recent pardon granted to Maryam Sanda by President Bola Tinubu, reinstating her death sentence. Sanda, a housewife in Abuja, was originally sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, during a domestic dispute.

President Tinubu had earlier reduced her sentence to 12 years in prison on compassionate grounds. However, in a judgment delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court, in a four-to-one decision, confirmed the death sentence upheld by the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal had previously agreed with the ruling of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, which first sentenced Sanda to death.

The Supreme Court resolved all issues raised in Sanda’s appeal, finding them without merit, and ruled that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The lead judgment, delivered by Justice Moore Adumein, stated that the lower courts were correct in their verdicts, restoring the original sentence.

The decision ends all legal avenues for Sanda to avoid the capital punishment, marking the final determination in the case that has drawn national attention since 2020.
