Kebbi State has strengthened its security system with the graduation of 819 National Forest Guards, trained to protect forest reserves and reduce criminal activities. The guards completed a nine-week training program in Kalgo Local Government Area, where they learned patrol operations, ambush tactics, early warning systems, and handling of AK-47 rifles.
The training was supervised by the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the military, demonstrating a coordinated effort to enhance security in the state. Officials at the graduation ceremony urged local communities and traditional leaders to work closely with the new guards to ensure their effectiveness in curbing forest-related crimes.
The National Security Adviser, through a representative, confirmed that the forest guards would be deployed immediately to vulnerable areas, including ungoverned forest corridors. Kebbi is one of seven states participating in the pilot phase of the National Forest Guard initiative, with Arewa, Augie, Dandi, and Danko-Wasagu Local Government Areas identified for the initial deployment.
State leaders said the new guards would work alongside existing security agencies to prevent criminals from using forest reserves as hideouts. Residents expressed hope that the enhanced security presence would weaken bandit networks and bring safety to communities that have long been at risk from criminal activities.
The program reflects the state government’s commitment to proactive measures against banditry and reinforces the importance of cooperation between security forces and local populations to maintain peace and order in rural areas.
