Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, a senior politician from the South-East, resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance and announced his move to the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections. He made the announcement publicly while presenting himself as a new member of the ADC, declaring his loyalty to the party and its leadership.
The defection took place the same day former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, alongside other South-East political leaders, formally aligned with the ADC during a meeting in Enugu, the Enugu State capital. The gathering followed months of consultations among opposition figures within and outside the region.
Abaribe explained that his decision was guided by the need for a united opposition capable of offering Nigerians a clear alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress. He aligned himself with Peter Obi and other leaders who believe the country requires a change in direction due to persistent challenges such as poor governance, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread poverty.
The senator is regarded as one of the notable voices from the South-East, having played an active role in national debates over the years. His move adds weight to the growing opposition coalition forming around the ADC as political activities gradually shift toward the 2027 elections.
The ADC coalition has positioned itself as a platform for opposition leaders seeking to work together across regions to challenge the ruling party. With Abaribe’s defection, the party continues to gain prominence as more political figures declare their intention to pursue a joint political future under its banner.
