The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday said former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is still unhappy about losing the 2023 presidential election, three years after the poll was held. Onanuga spoke while reacting to Obi’s decision to join the African Democratic Congress.
According to the presidential aide, Obi has continued to insist that he was denied victory in the election, despite data and election figures showing that he did not have enough votes to win. He stated that the outcome of the poll placed Obi third and that even this position was aided by votes recorded in the South-East.
Onanuga also criticised Obi’s speech after his defection, describing it as misleading and unconvincing. He said the former Anambra State governor did not perform well during his eight years in office and questioned his ability to manage a complex country like Nigeria.
The adviser further argued that national development cannot be achieved by copying ideas from other countries without considering local realities. He said each nation has its own challenges and requires leaders who can create solutions that fit its situation.
Onanuga added that President Tinubu has been taking steps based on Nigeria’s specific needs since assuming office in May 2023, but claimed that Obi has refused to acknowledge this due to personal resentment over the election outcome.
He concluded that constant movement from one political party to another and reliance on foreign examples do not offer a clear path to progress for the country.
