The Nigerian Army has reported that the detention of separatist leaders Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa has helped reduce criminal activities in the Southeast region. The army says the arrests have weakened the operational capacity of the extremist groups that have been active in the area.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, stated that crime in the region has dropped following intensified military operations and court rulings against the separatist leaders. Ekpa was recently jailed in Finland, while Kanu remains in detention in Nigeria. The army said these developments have limited the group’s ability to launch attacks on security outposts and checkpoints, which previously resulted in deaths and theft of weapons used for further attacks.
The army added that operations across the Southeast will continue to protect lives and property and prevent the militants from regrouping. Officials assured that troops will maintain vigilance to ensure the recent security improvements are sustained and to consolidate gains made in the fight against criminal activities in the region.
