The Ijaw Youth Council, speaking through its President, Theophilus Alaye, said the decision to support Fubara for a second term was taken after consultations across Ijaw communities and a review of political developments in Rivers State. The group said its position was based on its assessment of governance, leadership conduct, and the direction of the state under the current administration.
The endorsement comes weeks after Fubara left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress on December 9, following months of political tension involving party structures in the state. His move was later followed by several members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a development that reshaped the political landscape in the state ahead of 2027.
The Council said the governor’s defection marked a new phase in Rivers politics and placed him firmly as a leading figure within the APC in the state. It noted that despite political pressure and ongoing disagreements with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Fubara has remained focused on governance.
The youth body stated that claims suggesting the governor lacks public support do not reflect the views of Ijaw youths. According to the Council, Fubara has shown calm leadership and commitment to development despite distractions from political disputes.
It added that the current administration has continued to pursue policies centred on infrastructure improvement, job creation, youth inclusion, education, healthcare delivery, peace, and accountability in public service.
The Council also made it clear that it does not support any political arrangement linked to Wike or his associates that could weaken the authority of the Rivers State governor. It said political patience among the Ijaw people should not be mistaken for acceptance of interference in the state’s affairs.
Drawing examples from other states, the group noted that former governors across the country have allowed their successors to govern without obstruction, adding that Rivers State deserves similar political maturity.
The Ijaw Youth Council said it believes Fubara’s continuity in office is necessary to maintain stability, unity, and progress in Rivers State. It also called on the Federal Government and the leadership of the APC to respect the will of Rivers people if they seek the support of the Ijaw nation in the 2027 elections.
