The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors has said it may still go ahead with its nationwide strike scheduled to begin on January 12, 2026, despite a court order directing the association to suspend the action.
The association’s president, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, made this known on Friday during a television interview, where he explained that the strike would continue unless the National Executive Council of the association decides otherwise.
This development followed an earlier ruling by the National Industrial Court in Abuja, which restrained the association and two of its national officers from embarking on any industrial action. The court granted the interim order after a suit was filed by the Federal Government and the Attorney-General of the Federation against the association, its president, and its secretary-general.
Reacting to the court decision, Suleiman said the association was not discouraged by the order, stating that the government had failed to act sincerely even after the doctors suspended an earlier strike action in November 2025. He explained that a memorandum of understanding was signed in late November, leading to the postponement of a planned strike in December, with further time given at the start of the new year for implementation.
He added that the association became aware of the court injunction through reports circulating on social media, alongside claims of salary-related measures being introduced against striking doctors. According to him, such actions suggested a lack of trust in ongoing talks.
Suleiman, however, noted that discussions with the Federal Government were still ongoing and expressed hope that the issues could be resolved within a few days. He said the final decision on whether to proceed with the strike rests with the association’s National Executive Council.
