The Edo State Government on Saturday urged residents of Ekpoma to remain calm after a protest over rising insecurity disrupted movement and commercial activities in the town. The appeal came after angry residents blocked major roads, burnt tyres, and paraded the corpse of a youth allegedly killed by suspected kidnappers.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, reacted to the protest, stating that while citizens have the right to express their concerns, actions that block roads and disrupt public order can worsen security situations and expose residents to danger. He explained that such actions could also distract security agencies from their operations.
Afegbua said the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo understands the fears and frustrations of residents but believes that lasting security solutions depend on cooperation, intelligence sharing, and steady engagement with security agencies. He noted that the state’s approach to security includes strengthening the Edo Security Corps, supporting neighbourhood watch groups, and working closely with community leaders, traditional rulers, and neighbouring states.
He added that residents have access to proper channels to report security concerns and provide useful information that can help security operatives act effectively. According to him, protests carried out without coordination may complicate efforts to tackle crime.
The protest followed the discovery of a young man’s body in a bush on Friday night, an incident that sparked anger among residents who say kidnapping has become a major threat in the area. Farmers were said to be afraid to visit their farms, while daily activities were brought to a halt during the protest. Campaign billboards ahead of the 2027 general elections were also pulled down.
Reacting to the situation, the Principal Security Officer to the governor, Austin Eigbiremolen, assured residents that security would be reinforced in Ekpoma and that criminals would be forced out of the area. The Edo State Police Command also said officers were already on ground, adding that nine kidnapped persons, including children, were rescued unhurt during a recent operation after security forces tracked the kidnappers to their camp.
The state government reassured residents that security plans are being reviewed and strengthened, urging them to remain law-abiding and supportive of efforts to protect lives and property across Edo State.
