Two years after the deadly explosion in the Bodija area of Ibadan, survivors and families of those affected have again appealed to the government for financial help, saying many victims have not received support promised after the incident. The calls were made during an interdenominational remembrance service held to mark the second anniversary of the disaster.
The event, organised by the Bodija Estate Residents’ Association with support from local security groups, brought together residents, religious leaders, and officials of the Oyo State Government. Speakers at the gathering said several families who lost relatives or property are still facing hardship, with some unable to complete rebuilding work due to lack of funds.
Community leaders explained that earlier compensation plans were reduced after officials discovered that available funds were limited at the time. They added that reports of funds now being available have raised fresh hopes among victims, who believe support should be directed mainly at those still suffering rather than other projects.
The emotional effect of the explosion was also raised, with speakers noting that many survivors are still dealing with trauma and grief. They called for calm among residents while urging authorities to act quickly to ease the pain of affected families.
The issue of the intervention fund has remained controversial following claims that the Federal Government released a large sum to Oyo State after the explosion. While an initial amount was later confirmed by the state, officials said part of the fund is yet to be released and that the money already received remains set aside for recovery efforts.
Representing the state government, the Chairman of the Oyo State Housing Corporation said the government responded immediately after the incident by providing security, temporary accommodation, and other forms of support. He added that assistance did not stop after the emergency phase, as reconstruction of roads and damaged facilities is ongoing.
The government assured residents that support for victims remains a priority and that further help will be provided. Officials said the recovery process is still in progress and maintained that efforts will continue until affected families experience relief and stability.
