Some members of the Obidient Movement in Edo State on Monday officially joined the African Democratic Congress, marking a new political step for the group. The development followed reports that their leader, Peter Obi, had also moved to the party.
The new members were received by the national leadership of the ADC, led by Chief John Oyegun. He described the decision as a sign that Nigerians, especially young people, were ready to take part in efforts aimed at changing the country’s leadership direction. He noted that the growing number of people joining the party showed increasing interest in building a better Nigeria through collective action.
Oyegun expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by the Obidient members, stating that their involvement strengthened the party’s resolve to provide an alternative political platform for Nigerians who were dissatisfied with the current situation in the country and in Edo State.
The Edo State Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Asemota Igiogbe, said the ADC provided a strong platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress both in the state and at the national level. He added that the group believed the party could attract widespread support and expected Peter Obi to emerge as its presidential candidate in the future.
Igiogbe explained that the members joined the ADC to help build the party rather than seek personal positions. He said they planned to mobilise voters and promote the party’s message without relying on financial inducements. He also claimed that some politicians who previously benefited from their support later abandoned them for the APC.
The Edo State Chairman of the ADC, Kenneth Odion, welcomed the new members and said the party was well prepared to perform strongly in upcoming elections. He noted that the addition of the Obidient Movement members would boost the party’s structure and outreach.
The state woman leader of the ADC, Faith Ebhogabhe, also spoke during the event, describing the party as one committed to political change. She encouraged women and other supporters to remain active and committed, adding that the party aimed to bring relief to Nigerians through active participation in the democratic process.
