Ex-Power Minister Sale Mamman Launches Taraba APC Governorship Bid Despite N33.8b Fraud Trial

Former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has launched his campaign to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Taraba State ahead of the 2027 elections, even as he faces trial over an alleged N33.8 billion fraud. Mamman has reportedly opened a campaign office in the state capital, Jalingo, where he has started meeting political supporters, party members, and community groups.
Campaign posters and billboards displaying Mamman’s image and political slogans have appeared around Jalingo, signalling the start of early political mobilisation. APC local government officials recently visited his campaign office, offering support and engaging in discussions about party matters and collaboration for future activities.
Mamman has also received backing from members of the Jalingo Elders Forum, who reportedly pledged their support and promised to contribute their time and resources to his political ambition.
Mamman served as Nigeria’s Minister of Power from August 2019 to September 2021 before he was removed from office by the late President Muhammadu Buhari following a performance review. Currently, he is facing a 12-count charge at the Federal High Court, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), related to alleged conspiracy and money laundering connected to the Mambilla Hydropower Project. The EFCC claims that Mamman was involved in diverting funds from the Mambilla–Zungeru Special Project Account at the Central Bank of Nigeria into private accounts. He has pleaded not guilty, with his lawyers denying any links to the companies named in the case.
Despite the ongoing trial, Mamman’s political activities suggest a move to challenge the incumbent Governor, Agbu Kefas, for control of the APC in Taraba State as the 2027 election cycle approaches. His campaign signals an early and strategic effort to strengthen his position within the party and among voters.
