Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Senate of slowing down efforts to amend the Electoral Act 2022, raising fears about the conduct of the 2027 general elections. He said the continued delay suggests a lack of commitment to improving Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the next polls.
In a message shared on his verified social media page, Atiku described the 2023 general elections as a poor experience for democracy. He blamed weaknesses in the existing Electoral Act for creating room for manipulation and making it difficult for aggrieved parties to succeed in election cases before the courts.
According to him, reviewing the Electoral Act is necessary if the country wants to avoid a repeat of the problems seen during the last elections. He argued that without changes to the law, future elections would continue to face the same challenges.
Atiku expressed concern that the National Assembly, especially the Senate, has not shown urgency in handling the proposed amendments. He said the slow pace of action gives the impression that lawmakers are not interested in correcting the issues discovered after the 2023 polls.
He also referred to a recent investigative report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, which he said raised serious questions about the role of the Senate in the delay. In his view, the report should serve as a warning that urgent action is needed.
The former presidential candidate insisted that the amended Electoral Act must be passed and signed into law well before the 2027 elections. He warned that pushing the reforms too close to the polls, or failing to pass them at all, could damage public trust in the electoral process.
Atiku concluded by saying that any continued delay in amending the law would amount to laying the groundwork for problems long before Nigerians go to the polls in 2027.
