Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, supported by the Nigeria Labour Congress, on Monday staged a protest at the National Industrial Court in Abuja as part of an ongoing total and indefinite strike. The action followed continued disagreements between workers and the FCTA leadership over welfare and workplace conditions.
The Nigeria Labour Congress said it fully supports the strike, stating that the action became necessary after repeated complaints of poor treatment of workers were not resolved. The union said the problems had persisted despite several efforts to reach an understanding with the FCTA management and political leadership.
During the protest, workers blocked access to parts of the court premises while chanting solidarity songs. They carried placards with messages calling for the removal of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, payment of outstanding promotion arrears, provision of working tools, and respect for workers’ rights. Some of the messages stressed that Abuja should not be run in the same manner as Rivers State.
The protesters said the strike would continue until their demands are addressed, adding that previous agreements had not been honoured. They insisted that the action was peaceful and aimed at drawing attention to their long-standing grievances.
As of the time of the protest, there was no official response from the FCTA leadership, while union leaders maintained that workers would remain resolute until concrete steps are taken to resolve the issues.
