President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following a deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The meeting came days after armed attackers invaded the rural community, killing scores of residents and throwing the area into mourning. Reports from the state said more than 70 people lost their lives during the attack, while several others were taken away by the assailants.
In response to the incident, President Tinubu approved the deployment of a full military battalion to parts of Kwara State. The federal government also appointed a field commander and launched a new security operation known as Operation Savanna Shield to tackle the rising violence in the area.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the decision was taken to provide quick relief to affected communities and restore peace. He said the military operation had already commenced as part of efforts to stop further attacks.
Governor AbdulRazaq also visited Kaiama alongside security chiefs and senior government officials to assess the situation on the ground. He described the attack as brutal, noting that many of the victims were local residents targeted during the invasion.
Further details from the area revealed that the bodies of the victims were recovered after the attack and buried following funeral prayers on Wednesday evening. A member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Saidu Baba Ahmed, who witnessed the burial, confirmed that the victims included men and women, while dozens of residents were abducted into nearby forests.
The federal intervention followed growing concerns over security in the region, with authorities linking the attack to armed groups operating around the border areas. President Tinubu condemned the killings and directed security agencies to work closely with the state government to protect lives and property.
Other top government officials, including leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress and some state governors, were also present at the Presidential Villa as discussions continued on ways to stabilise the affected communities and prevent further violence.
