FCT Poll: I’ll Back Only Tinubu Loyalists – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday in Abuja said he would support only candidates who are loyal to President Bola Tinubu in the FCT Area Councils election fixed for February 21.

He made this known during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, held in the nation’s capital.

Wike said his role as FCT Minister requires him to work for the success of candidates who stand with the President. He stated that party lines would not matter in the council poll, as long as the candidate supports Tinubu.

According to him, he would also work against any aspirant who does not align with the President’s political direction. He added that he does not regret his open support for Tinubu.

The minister spoke at the birthday event organised to mark six decades of Onor’s life in scholarship, public service and politics.

He described the former senator as a dependable friend and ally who has stood by him in difficult times. Wike said their relationship goes beyond politics and is built on trust and loyalty. He assured the celebrant of his continued friendship and cooperation.

A citation read by Professor Anthony Eyang traced Onor’s life from his birth on February 14, 1966, in Ikom, Cross River State. He was raised in a home grounded in discipline, faith and community values.

His career began in academics as a historian at the University of Calabar before he moved into politics, serving in the Nigerian Senate and later taking part in political activities in Cross River State.

Chairman of the planning committee, Senator Philip Aduda, said the event was organised to thank God for Onor’s life and journey as both a scholar and politician.

Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who represented former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, described Onor as a leader prepared for public responsibility. Ikpeazu, who is now an ambassador-designate, was chairman of the occasion.

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kalu Agabi (SAN), also spoke about Onor’s character and intellect, noting his respect for the Nigerian Constitution.

During the ceremony, Professor Dave Imbua presented a festschrift written in honour of the celebrant by fellow scholars, describing him as a respected figure in the field of history. Ikpeazu unveiled the book on behalf of Wike and other friends of Onor with a donation of N50 million.

In his remarks, Onor said reaching the age of 60 had taught him the value of character and excellence. He said hard work brings results but added that faith in God remains central in life. He expressed gratitude to his family, friends and supporters for their presence and goodwill.

The event drew politicians, academics and associates who gathered to celebrate Onor’s contributions to education and public service.
