Ebonyi Gov Visits Family of Slain Monarch, Vows Justice

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, on Friday visited the family of a traditional ruler, Eze Francis Igwe, who was recently abducted and killed in the state.

The visit took place in Ebonyi as the governor led members of the State Executive Council to the home of the late monarch to sympathise with the bereaved family and discuss developments in the case.

The late traditional ruler was the father of the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Eric Igwe. His death followed an abduction that occurred on March 1, 2026, while he was travelling to church. The incident later led to his killing, which has caused grief among residents and officials in the state.

During the visit, the governor and members of the executive council met with the family to offer condolences and support.

The state government had earlier suspended scheduled council activities to allow officials participate in the condolence visit. The governor also spoke about the security reports available to the government and the steps taken by security agencies since the incident occurred.

Nwifuru told the family that suspects linked to the crime had been arrested and would face legal action. He explained that security agencies were continuing their investigation in order to identify and arrest anyone connected to the killing.

The governor also assured the family that the government would continue efforts to protect lives and property across the state.

The police in Ebonyi had earlier confirmed that the monarch died after being kidnapped by gunmen. According to the police, security operatives began an operation shortly after the abduction was reported.

Intelligence gathered during the operation led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be members of the group responsible for the kidnapping.

During questioning, the suspects reportedly provided information about the incident and directed security operatives to the location used by the gang.

Police officers later moved towards the hideout but came under gunfire from other members of the group, which resulted in a gun battle. Further operations led to the arrest of seven more suspects.

Police authorities said the total number of suspects in custody in connection with the case has reached nine. Investigations are continuing as security agencies work to uncover the full details of the crime and bring everyone involved before the law.

The governor also extended condolences to members of the Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area, where the late monarch came from.

The state government said it would continue to work with security agencies to address criminal activities and maintain peace in communities across Ebonyi State.
