El-Rufai gets temporary bail after mother’s death

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was granted temporary bail on Friday in Nigeria by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to allow him attend the burial of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

The release came shortly after news of her death, which was made public by family members. She was said to be about 100 years old and passed away just days after the death of her daughter-in-law, adding to the family’s grief. El-Rufai’s son confirmed that his father had been freed from custody to take part in funeral rites.

The former governor is currently facing corruption and money laundering charges and had been in detention following his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Kaduna earlier in the week. The court had fixed a later date to hear applications, including his bail request, before the temporary release was granted.

Following the announcement of the matriarch’s death, tributes came from top political figures across the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed sympathy to the family, noting the pain of losing a mother and praying for strength for those she left behind. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also mourned her, describing her life as fulfilled and offering prayers for her soul.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani extended condolences on behalf of the state, describing the late matriarch as a woman known for kindness, humility, and service to her community. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also paid tribute, recalling personal memories and expressing sadness over her passing.

As of the time of the report, burial arrangements had not been officially announced, while El-Rufai is expected to return to face ongoing legal proceedings after the funeral rites are completed.
