NDC clears Obi for presidential primary

The Nigeria Democratic Congress approved Peter Obi to contest in its presidential primary after the party’s screening committee confirmed that he met the necessary requirements. The exercise was conducted in Abuja and lasted for more than two hours as committee members examined his personal documents, academic records and other credentials connected to the presidential race.

The chairman of the screening committee, Sam Egwu, announced the decision through a statement shared on the party’s official social media platform. According to the committee, Obi satisfied the conditions stated in the party constitution, the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution.

During the exercise, Obi was also questioned about his plans for the country and the type of leadership he intends to provide if elected president in 2027. After the screening process ended, the party handed him the presidential nomination form linked to his earlier payment.

Obi later confirmed the development on his official social media account, where he described the screening process as thorough and transparent. He also commended the committee members and the leadership of the party for conducting what he viewed as a credible exercise.

The clearance comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 general election are becoming more active across Nigeria. Opposition parties have continued consultations, alliance talks and internal preparations as they position themselves for the next presidential contest.

Obi remains one of the major opposition figures expected to play a strong role in the coming election season as political parties continue to prepare for their primaries and coalition discussions.
