Ekiti Poll: PDP Accuses Oyebanji of Using Security Agencies to Intimidate Opposition

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State has accused Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration of creating an atmosphere of fear ahead of the state governorship election scheduled for June 20.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Ayodeji Ogunsakin, alleged that opposition supporters have been subjected to arrests, detention and harassment because of their involvement with the party.

According to him, security operatives have allegedly targeted PDP supporters and members of other opposition parties in different parts of the state. He claimed that some individuals were picked up under questionable circumstances and that the situation was creating anxiety among opposition members.

Ogunsakin also alleged that residences of some opposition figures had been raided during the night, while others were reportedly detained for activities linked to election campaigns. He said some party members had faced difficulties simply for displaying campaign materials or openly identifying with PDP candidates.

The PDP chieftain expressed concern that such developments could increase political tension as the election draws closer. He argued that democracy works best when citizens are free to support political parties and express their views without fear of intimidation.

He called on President Bola Tinubu, security agencies and other relevant authorities to look into the allegations and ensure that all political parties operate under equal conditions during the election period. He also urged security personnel to remain neutral and carry out their duties professionally.

Ogunsakin further accused the state government of paying more attention to opposition figures instead of addressing security concerns affecting residents. He maintained that political contests should be decided by public support and performance rather than actions capable of discouraging opposition participation.

However, the Ekiti State Government rejected the allegations. The Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, described the claims as false and an attempt by the PDP to attract attention ahead of the election.

Olatunbosun stated that Governor Oyebanji has no involvement in the arrest of any individual and advised the PDP to direct its complaints to security agencies if it believes any wrongdoing has occurred.

He maintained that law enforcement agencies are responsible for handling matters involving violations of the law and insisted that political affiliation does not shield anyone from legal processes. He also urged party members to respect the law and avoid actions capable of causing disorder.

The commissioner defended the governor’s leadership style, describing him as a peaceful leader committed to good governance and stability in the state.

The exchange comes less than two weeks before Ekiti voters head to the polls, with political activities intensifying as parties seek support across the state.
