Kidnappings: Declare State of Emergency on Security — Atiku to FG

Atiku made the call after the deadly attack on Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The attack claimed the lives of three people, including the school’s vice principal, while several students were reportedly taken away by the attackers.

The ADC presidential candidate expressed concern over the increasing attacks on educational institutions, saying the trend appears to be targeting the country’s education sector. According to him, repeated attacks on schools threaten learning and could affect the nation’s future development.

He recalled recent incidents in Oyo and Borno states where dozens of students were abducted, noting that such attacks continue to create fear among students, teachers and parents.

In a statement released through his media office, Atiku said Nigeria’s security situation has reached a level that requires extraordinary measures. He explained that the emergency action he proposed was not intended to remove elected state officials but to give security commanders more freedom to make decisions and respond quickly to threats without unnecessary political interference.

The former vice president maintained that schools can only function properly when they are safe. He warned that continued attacks on educational institutions could discourage learning and leave lasting emotional effects on both students and teachers.

Atiku also said attacks on one school have consequences beyond the immediate community because they create fear in schools across the country. He warned that allowing terrorists and bandits to continue operating freely could disrupt normal life and prevent children from accessing education.

As part of measures to improve security, he proposed the creation of a national guard made up of retired military personnel and veterans to support the efforts of the armed forces and police. He argued that security agencies are facing increasing pressure and require additional manpower.

He also called for stronger intelligence gathering and better cooperation between security agencies and local communities. According to him, residents have an important role to play by providing useful information that can help prevent attacks and track criminal activities.

Atiku stressed that urgent action is needed to stop the worsening security situation and restore confidence among Nigerians.
