Working With Me Is Tough, Wike Tells Contractors

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday said working with him is not easy because he expects contractors and public officials to deliver projects on schedule and meet required standards.

He made the remark in Abuja during the inauguration of the Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters in the Katampe area, a project commissioned as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu. During the ceremony, Wike spoke about the importance of providing a suitable environment for judicial officers, stating that the judiciary requires good facilities and improved welfare to function effectively and uphold the rule of law.

According to the minister, the completion of the judges’ quarters reflects the commitment of the current administration to improving public infrastructure. He noted that the judiciary cannot operate at its best without adequate support and decent working and living conditions for its personnel.

Wike explained that his approach to leadership involves close monitoring of projects and strict supervision of contractors. He revealed that he personally visited the judges’ quarters project site many times during construction to ensure that work progressed according to plan.

He said contractors handling government projects must prove they have the ability to deliver and should not allow weather conditions or other excuses to slow down work after receiving public funds.

The minister praised the timely completion of the project and commended those involved in its execution. He said the successful delivery of the housing facility showed what could be achieved when officials and contractors remain focused on their responsibilities.

He also expressed sympathy for the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, noting that the demands of his office require constant accountability and performance. Wike maintained that public officers entrusted with important assignments must be prepared to meet expectations and complete projects within approved timelines.

Speaking further, the FCT minister urged the leadership of the Federal High Court to maintain the newly completed facility properly. He stressed the need for a stronger maintenance culture in public institutions, warning that government investments could lose value if facilities are not properly cared for after completion.

Wike said he hopes the judges’ quarters will remain in excellent condition in the coming years. He added that public property should be treated with the same level of care people give to their personal homes.

The minister concluded by expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the project and reiterated his belief that discipline, supervision, and commitment to results are necessary for successful project delivery in government.
