2027: Jonathan dismisses Alleged N500bn Offer to Contest Against Peter Obi

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed claims that he was offered N500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The clarification was made through a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, following the circulation of reports linking the former president to the alleged political offer.

According to Jonathan’s media office, the report is entirely false and was created to drag the former president into unnecessary political controversy ahead of the next general election.

The statement said the publication claimed Jonathan received an offer of N500 billion to join the presidential race with the aim of splitting votes in the South-South region, but failed to provide any credible details to support the allegation.

It noted that the report did not state when or where the alleged offer was made, who was responsible for it or identify any witnesses who could verify the claim. Jonathan’s media aide said the absence of such information showed that the story lacked credibility.

Eze described the publication as fabricated and intended to mislead the public while creating political tension as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

He maintained that Jonathan never made any statement suggesting he was offered money to contest the presidency or to work against any presidential candidate.

The statement also urged Nigerians to ignore the report and avoid sharing unverified political claims. It advised members of the public to confirm the authenticity of sensational stories before circulating them, especially as election periods often witness the spread of false information.

Jonathan’s media office added that the former president has not been involved in any arrangement related to the alleged offer and insisted that the report should not be regarded as factual.
