2027: Northern Igbo Group Endorses Tinubu for Second Term

The Igbo Political Movement of the Igbo Delegates Assembly in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

The group announced its support for Tinubu on Saturday during a press conference in Kaduna, where it also pledged to mobilise two million eligible voters across the North and the FCT for the All Progressives Congress.

The movement further declared its backing for APC candidates seeking governorship and legislative seats across the Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Director-General of the group, Chief John Amaechi Onwe, said the decision followed consultations with traders, business owners, youths, women and community leaders across the region.

He said members of the movement had also assessed the performance of the Tinubu administration since it came into office before deciding to support the President’s re-election bid.

The endorsement comes despite the involvement of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, in the 2027 presidential race. Obi, who is also of Igbo origin, is contesting under the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Onwe said the movement’s decision was based on its assessment of the government’s policies and not ethnic considerations.

The group adopted the theme, Continuity, Prosperity and Inclusion, for its campaign and argued that some of the economic policies introduced by the Tinubu administration required additional time to produce their full results.

The movement pointed to the removal of fuel subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange system as some of the major policies it believes have helped increase government revenue and reduce some financial leakages.

It also praised the Federal Government for ongoing road and transport projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway and roads linked to the Second Niger Bridge.

According to the group, better road networks would make it easier for businesses to move goods between different parts of the country and improve commercial activities.

The movement also claimed that some Igbo traders and business owners operating in Northern commercial centres had benefited from government support programmes for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

It further expressed support for the student loan scheme, consumer credit programme, manufacturing policies, gas development plans and measures aimed at making it easier to operate businesses in Nigeria.

The group also welcomed the increase in the monthly allowance paid to members of the National Youth Service Corps from N33,000 to N77,000. It said the increase would provide better support for young Nigerians serving in different parts of the country.

The movement said it would now begin mobilising its structures across the 19 Northern states and the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections.

It also plans to educate its members at the grassroots about the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration as part of its campaign activities.

The group urged Nigerians to avoid ethnic politics, division and hostility during the election season, saying the country needed stability and continued implementation of government programmes.

The movement said it would work for the success of Tinubu and other APC candidates contesting governorship and legislative positions across the Northern states and the FCT in the 2027 elections.
