Shettima Clarifies Remark on Northern Governors’ Support for Tinubu in 2023

Vice President Kashim Shettima has clarified his recent remarks about the support received by President Bola Tinubu from northern governors ahead of the 2023 presidential election, saying his comment referred to political consultations before the APC presidential primary in 2022.

Shettima gave the clarification on Thursday through a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha.

The Vice President explained that his reference to six northern governors was about the political discussions and alignments that took place before the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential primary held in June 2022.

He said the comment was not intended to describe the position of northern APC governors after Tinubu emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, nor was it meant to suggest that they did not support his campaign during the 2023 election.

According to the clarification, northern APC governors rallied behind Tinubu after the party’s presidential primary and participated in the campaign and other political activities that contributed to the party’s efforts during the 2023 general election.

Shettima also expressed his respect for the northern governors and other APC leaders, noting their individual and collective roles in the party’s activities and Tinubu’s emergence as president.

The Vice President said he was concerned about interpretations of his earlier remarks that may have given a different impression. He therefore provided the clarification to put his comments in the proper context.

Shettima also acknowledged the role of the media in reporting political developments and appreciated journalists for their engagement with his office.

He urged media practitioners to continue to provide accurate reports and sufficient context when covering statements by public officials, particularly as the country moves closer to another election season.

The clarification comes as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ruling APC and opposition parties already stepping up consultations and preparations across the country.
