All members of the Enugu State Executive Council have left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Governor Peter Mbah’s expected official defection on Tuesday.
The development, confirmed on Monday by the governor’s Senior Media Aide, Dan Nwomeh, marks a major political shift in the state’s leadership. Nwomeh shared a video on social media showing commissioners and top aides declaring their support for the APC and pledging loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The move comes as former PDP National Youth Leader and ex-Enugu lawmaker, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, also resigned from the PDP. In his resignation letter to his Agbogugu Ward chairman in Awgu Local Government Area, Udeh-Okoye said the party had lost its founding vision and moral direction.
He stated that although he valued the opportunities the PDP gave him to serve, he could no longer remain in a system that had drifted away from its principles. Udeh-Okoye, who once contested for the position of National Secretary against Senator Samuel Anyanwu, played a central role in the party’s internal crisis that divided its leadership.
Political observers believe that Governor Mbah’s move to the APC and the mass defection of his cabinet could change the political structure of Enugu State, which has been under PDP control since 1999.
Reports indicate that Mbah’s formal declaration for the APC will take place on Tuesday, with several lawmakers and political appointees expected to follow suit, deepening the ongoing realignment in the state’s political landscape.
