The Anambra State Government has refuted reports alleging that Governor Chukwuma Soludo plans to arrest and jail religious leaders, including Catholic bishops and native doctors, after his re-election.
The clarification came on Tuesday following claims circulating on social media suggesting that the governor had a list of clerics and traditional healers targeted for arrest if he wins another term.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the government described the report as a deliberate attempt to spread tension and distract voters ahead of the November 8, 2025, governorship election.
The statement noted that Governor Soludo remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens, including religious leaders, and has no reason or plan to target any faith group or individual.
The government urged residents to disregard the rumours, which it said were being spread by political opponents seeking to create division and fear among the people. It added that such false stories were part of an online campaign aimed at undermining peace in the state.Dr. Mefor explained that the administration’s efforts to address fake spiritual practitioners, fraudulent native doctors, and self-acclaimed seers should not be mistaken for religious persecution.
He said the government would continue its campaign against impostors who deceive or exploit the public in the name of religion.The Anambra government also reaffirmed its partnership with the Federal Government to identify and prosecute certificate forgers and other fraud-related offenders in the state.
Governor Soludo, who is running for re-election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), will contest against about sixteen other candidates in the upcoming poll.
The government maintained that its focus remains on sustaining peace, promoting lawfulness, and protecting every citizen regardless of belief or background.
