President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The brief ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at about 1:50 p.m.
The President urged the newly appointed INEC boss to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure transparency in the conduct of future elections. He also tasked Amupitan with strengthening the capacity of the commission to deliver credible and fair polls across the country.
Amupitan’s appointment followed his confirmation by the Senate on October 16 after a thorough screening exercise. His swearing-in marks the beginning of a new leadership phase for the electoral body as Nigeria prepares for future elections under the current administration.
The legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria replaces the former chairman and is expected to bring his experience and professionalism to enhance the efficiency of the commission.The ceremony was attended by top government officials and members of the Federal Executive Council.
