The Young Progressives Party has expelled Peter Uzokwe, the lawmaker representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, over alleged anti-party activities and misconduct.
The expulsion was confirmed on Monday after an emergency meeting of the party’s National Working Committee held at the YPP National Secretariat in Abuja. The decision followed a viral video showing Uzokwe publicly declaring support for the All Progressives Grand Alliance and its candidate, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election.
In the video, Uzokwe openly urged his supporters to back Soludo, claiming that the YPP had no candidate in the coming poll. His remarks drew sharp criticism from party leaders, who accused him of attempting to mislead the public and undermine the YPP’s credibility in the state.
Following the circulation of the video, the party received several petitions against the lawmaker. After reviewing the evidence, the National Working Committee concluded that Uzokwe had breached the party’s constitution and disciplinary guidelines. The committee then ratified his immediate expulsion for what it described as gross misconduct and deliberate sabotage.
The YPP leadership also rejected Uzokwe’s claim of being the party’s leader, clarifying that the position became vacant after the death of the late national leader, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. The party said Uzokwe’s actions were politically motivated and aimed at weakening the YPP’s structure in Anambra State ahead of the election.
The leadership further urged members and supporters to disregard Uzokwe’s statements and remain loyal to the party, assuring them that YPP would participate fully in the Anambra governorship poll with its own candidate.
Since its formation in 2017, the YPP has worked to build a presence in Nigeria’s political space, gaining attention when Ifeanyi Ubah won a Senate seat under its platform in 2019. However, following Ubah’s death earlier this year, the party has struggled with internal divisions and leadership challenges in Anambra State.
Uzokwe’s expulsion marks the first major disciplinary decision by the YPP since the crisis within the party deepened ahead of the upcoming election. The party said it remains committed to rebuilding its structure and ensuring that its members uphold loyalty and discipline as it moves forward.
