A political group linked to the Peoples Democratic Party, known as the PDP Like-Minds Group, has called on the United States government to intervene in protecting Nigeria’s democratic system, which it claims is facing growing threats.
The appeal was made on Thursday during a peaceful demonstration at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. The group, led by its South-South Coordinator, Ebiowei Amakiri, urged President Donald Trump’s administration to use diplomatic measures to support Nigeria’s democratic structures and prevent what it described as increasing suppression of opposition voices.
During the protest, members of the group held placards and presented a letter to the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills. The letter, dated November 4, 2025, was titled “Appeal for the United States to Intervene in Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democracy.” It accused certain political figures and officials within national institutions of undermining free elections and weakening public trust in the system.
The group expressed concern that some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and parts of the judiciary have contributed to electoral misconduct and unfair judgments. It warned that continued political manipulation and lack of accountability could push the country toward instability.
According to the group, corruption, voter intimidation, and a lack of transparency in government have eroded justice and public confidence. It urged the United States to use its diplomatic influence to encourage reforms, ensure accountability, and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The protest comes amid rising concerns within and outside Nigeria about the state of electoral integrity, judicial independence, and political freedom as the country continues its 26-year democratic journey.
