The legislative arm of Agege Local Government in Lagos has written to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, requesting approval for AbdulGaniyu Obasa to take over as the new chairman of the council.
The request follows the resignation of the incumbent chairman, Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to health challenges. Before his resignation, Azeez had been away in the United Kingdom for medical treatment, leaving Obasa, the vice chairman, to act in his absence.
AbdulGaniyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been overseeing council affairs for about two months while Azeez was on medical leave. After receiving Azeez’s resignation letter, the legislative arm deliberated and resolved to confirm Obasa as the new substantive chairman.
Lawmakers said the next step was to seek the governor’s endorsement to formalize the appointment. The letter to Sanwo-Olu was sent after the council meeting where Azeez’s resignation was acknowledged.
Sources in Agege said Azeez had earlier informed the council of his medical trip before officially resigning. A political group, Agege Youth Vanguard, had previously bought a N5 million nomination form for AbdulGaniyu to contest in the 2025 local government elections, though his name was later dropped, and he eventually became the vice chairman.
Azeez’s resignation ends his short tenure as council chairman, which was cut short by his health condition. AbdulGaniyu is expected to continue in the position once the governor approves the legislative council’s recommendation.
Both Azeez and Obasa were unavailable for comments as calls to their phones were not answered.
