The Peoples Democratic Party has confirmed that its national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, will go on as planned despite ongoing legal disputes and internal disagreements.
The clarification came after conflicting reports suggested that the exercise had been postponed following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja. In a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary and Secretary of the Convention Publicity Sub-committee, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP maintained that preparations were still ongoing and that delegates and party stakeholders had already begun arriving in Ibadan.
According to Ologunagba, the leadership remains focused on conducting the event as scheduled, adding that no legal obstacle would stop the process. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to destabilise the main opposition through misinformation and legal distractions.
However, a faction of the PDP loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had earlier declared that the convention was suspended in compliance with a court order. Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, stated that the decision followed a ruling by Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja restraining the party from going ahead with the exercise pending resolution of leadership issues.
They further noted that an appeal had been filed at the Court of Appeal, and the decision to suspend the event was in line with respect for judicial processes.
The confusion deepened after another ruling from an Oyo State High Court granted the party permission to proceed with the convention. The conflicting judgments have left party members divided over which court order should take precedence.
Anyanwu argued that the Abuja court ruling should be regarded as binding, given its jurisdiction over national matters, while the Oyo order was only a temporary one.
