Lagos, Nigeria – A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has opposed the appeal by former Senate President Bukola Saraki to suspend the party’s upcoming national convention. The event is scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Saraki had earlier advised the PDP leadership to postpone the convention and appoint a caretaker committee, citing conflicting court rulings that could affect the legality of the gathering. However, George dismissed the proposal, describing it as unnecessary and contrary to the party’s constitution.
Speaking during an interview on Thursday, the former Deputy National Chairman maintained that the PDP remains strong despite internal disagreements. He stated that the existing National Working Committee is functional and ready to oversee the convention as planned.
George accused some members of attempting to create confusion within the party for their personal gain. He also faulted the suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, for allegedly spreading misinformation about the postponement of the convention without proper authority.
He explained that most members of the National Working Committee still support the scheduled convention, stressing that the party’s leadership must resolve its issues internally, as directed by the courts.
George criticised the behaviour of some members whom he described as acting against the values of the party’s founding fathers. He said such actions were bringing disunity and disrepute to the PDP, which has been one of Nigeria’s leading political parties since its formation.
The PDP has faced several internal challenges in recent months, including court disputes over leadership positions and disagreements among senior figures. Despite these issues, preparations for the national convention in Ibadan are continuing, with party leaders expressing confidence that the event will go ahead as planned.
