Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend its planned national convention scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. He made the appeal on Wednesday night after a meeting with members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) Reconciliation Committee at his residence in Abuja.
Saraki said that the convention should be put on hold due to legal and political issues threatening the credibility of the exercise. He explained that the internal crisis within the PDP, including conflicting court orders about the validity of the convention, could make any outcome from the gathering questionable.
According to him, the party should focus on unity and internal peace rather than rushing into a convention that could worsen its problems. He advised that the BoT should recommend the creation of a caretaker committee within the next two days to oversee party activities and rebuild confidence among members and aspirants.
Saraki noted that proceeding with the convention despite pending court cases would be unwise, as it could render the process invalid and deepen existing divisions. He warned that the situation might discourage serious political aspirants from contesting under the PDP platform because of uncertainty over the legality of their nominations.
The internal crisis within the PDP has continued to escalate in recent weeks following multiple suspensions and counter-suspensions among party officials. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s camp suspended National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and others for alleged anti-party actions. In response, Anyanwu’s group dismissed the decision and announced the suspension of Damagum and his allies, further widening the rift.
