Delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday confirmed Umaru Damagum as the party’s National Chairman during the 2025 elective convention held at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State. The decision was reached when party members from across the country gathered for the first day of the two-day convention, which runs from November 15 to 16.
The confirmation followed a motion presented by Tony Abineri, who represented the Edo State chapter of the party on behalf of thousands of delegates at the venue. Edward Marshal supported the motion. Party officials said the approval was in line with the section of the PDP Constitution that guides the confirmation of national officers.
The convention was organised to choose a new national chairman, and delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were expected to take part in the voting process. As the event progressed, there were also strong talks that former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, might return as national chairman since he was the only person seeking the position.
At the stadium, governors, former office holders and party members filled the main bowl as they took part in the day’s activities. Addressing the gathering, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde spoke about the long journey that led to the convention and expressed support for the party’s effort to rebuild ahead of future elections.
