Atiku Abubakar registered as a member of the ADC at Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State and collected a membership card in front of party supporters. Shortly after, a faction of the party led by Nafiu Bala announced that the registration was not recognised. The group said the people who carried out the registration were not approved by the party’s national headquarters and did not have the power to add new members.
The faction explained that Atiku had been advised to register through the officially recognised ward executives but had not done so. They also linked his action to ongoing political moves, suggesting he may be keeping the ADC as an option while dealing with issues inside the Peoples Democratic Party, which he left earlier in the year.
The party is currently facing internal leadership problems, with a court case challenging the legitimacy of its national leadership. The faction said these problems must be resolved before new alliances can be fully accepted.
Atiku’s registration was supervised by the Adamawa ADC chairman and witnessed by several well-known politicians in the state. His decision to join the ADC is also connected to wider talks among opposition figures preparing for the 2027 elections. However, the rejection by the party faction has now added fresh tension to the situation.
