The national leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party have reached out to former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, asking him to support efforts to restore unity and stability in the party. This move came after Lamido granted an interview on BBC Hausa, where he criticised the way the party handled its leadership problems and spoke about a court case he filed on the issue.
A close associate of the PDP National Chairman, Umar Sani, reacted by saying that some of the claims made by Lamido were not correct and needed proper explanation. He explained that no court stopped the party from holding its national convention, contrary to what Lamido had suggested. According to him, the court only directed that Lamido should be allowed to take part in the contest once proper checks were carried out, and the party had already challenged that order at the Supreme Court.
Sani also revealed that a court in Ibadan later gave the PDP clear approval to go ahead with its convention. He added that the convention was successfully held and new national officers were elected, dismissing the claim that the party does not have valid leadership.
The party leaders called on Lamido to put the future of the PDP above personal issues and avoid dragging the matter through long court cases, which they believe is hurting the party’s chances of success. They stressed that Lamido is one of the founding figures of the party and that his cooperation is important at a time when the PDP is facing internal problems and public criticism over elections and administration.
The PDP leadership also urged Lamido to work closely with the current national chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, noting that both men have shared a good relationship in the past and can still work together to move the party forward.
