The group loyal to the FCT Minister approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking the court to void the PDP convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The case was filed by the party, its Acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman, and its National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. They asked the court to declare the convention and all decisions taken there as having no legal effect and also asked the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising the outcome.
The case followed earlier court actions by PDP members who said the convention broke party rules and violated the Electoral Act and other laws. Some party officials from Imo, Abia and the South-South had earlier gone to court to challenge the process. Earlier, a Federal High Court in Abuja had restrained INEC from recognising the convention, while another court directed that the convention should not go ahead unless a former governor of Jigawa State was allowed to participate.
Despite the different court rulings, the convention held in Ibadan under heavy security. During the event, some senior party members, including Samuel Anyanwu, Nyesom Wike, and Ayo Fayose, were expelled.
In the fresh suit, the plaintiffs listed many defendants, including INEC, the Inspector-General of Police, the police authorities in the FCT, the State Security Service, and several PDP officials. They asked the court to prevent recognition of new party officers, return access to the party’s offices in Abuja, and direct security agencies to enforce earlier court orders.
They also asked the court to decide whether any authority can lawfully recognise the Ibadan convention based on the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the PDP constitution. The case has not yet been assigned to a judge, and no hearing date has been fixed.
