Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after completing his registration as a party member. He made this move as part of a wider coalition plan aimed at changing the current federal government in the next general elections.
During the registration event, El-Rufai explained that he and Peter Obi had earlier reached an agreement with coalition partners to remain in their former political parties until by-elections and off-cycle elections were concluded. He stated that those elections have now ended, making it necessary for them to fully commit to the coalition platform.
He explained that the Labour Party no longer provided a suitable platform for Peter Obi, just as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) no longer served his own political direction. He said this led both of them to move forward with their plans under the ADC.
El-Rufai also revealed that he had originally joined the SDP after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) in March 2025. He said the plan was for the SDP to serve as the main vehicle for the coalition, but that option failed after some party leaders allegedly aligned with the government and blocked the coalition’s entry into the party.
According to him, the ADC later accepted the coalition’s conditions and was adopted as the official platform in July 2025. He thanked party officials present at the event for supporting his registration and welcoming the coalition into the party.
He further criticised the Kaduna State government, accusing current leaders of poor governance and misuse of public funds. He urged residents of the state who are 18 years and above to register with the ADC, collect their permanent voter cards, and prepare to vote in the 2027 elections.
El-Rufai concluded by calling on Nigerians to support the coalition’s efforts to remove the current leadership and vote for change in the next national polls.
