The Labour Party, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has sent a new 34-member Interim National Working Committee list to the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja. The list, which carried the signatures of Usman as Interim National Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary, was dated November 27 and received by the commission on November 28, 2025.
The party informed INEC that the new list was prepared based on its constitution and a National Executive Council decision made on July 18, 2025. The Usman-led group asked the commission to accept the submitted names as the official leadership of the party. This action came a day after another faction, led by Julius Abure, held its own NEC meeting in Abuja and maintained that Abure remained the national chairman.
The Usman-led leadership has the backing of Abia State Governor Alex Otti, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other party figures. The new list was said to replace an earlier list sent in August, as well as the list recently forwarded by the Abure faction.
In the cover letter to INEC, Usman explained that the interim committee was created in line with the Labour Party constitution and the NEC decisions of July 18, which the commission had already acknowledged. She noted that the NEC gave the interim leaders the authority to put together the full national leadership as contained in Article 13 of the party’s constitution. She asked INEC to record the new list as the lawful Interim National Working Committee of the Labour Party.
The list includes other members such as Mohammed Misau, Mrs. Nike Oriola, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Eragbe Anselem, Sarah Bago, Aishat Madije, Hamisu San Turaki, Ife Salako, Chinelo Oforche, Eric Ifere, Edwin Bafteng, Gloria George-Omunu, Joseph Ndirang, Aminu Kanya, Prof. Austin Akubue, Martina Umana and Femi Kehinde, among others.
The development adds to the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party, coming less than 24 hours after the Abure camp held its own NEC meeting attended by INEC officials and former vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed.
