The Peoples Democratic Party set up a new caretaker committee for Enugu State on Sunday in Enugu. The committee was created by the faction of the National Working Committee led by Acting National Chairman Abdulraham Mohameed and National Secretary Sam Anyanwu. The move comes as the party begins early steps to regain its hold on the state before the 2027 elections.
The event brought together party members from all 17 local government areas after months of internal inactivity. Former Igboeze South Local Government Chairman, Vitus Okechi, took charge as Chairman of the committee, while Chukwunonye Okereke was sworn in as State Secretary.
Okechi called for unity among members and urged those who stayed with the party during its internal crisis to stay committed. He said the party aims to rebuild its base with a stronger and more organised plan that will reconnect with supporters at the grassroots level.
Okereke, in his address, said the committee will work with honesty and openness. He noted that the party wants to rebuild trust among members while restoring its structure in the state.
Former Vice Chairman, Ozo Okey Ozoani, praised the NWC for choosing a new team and said the party now has a chance to correct past errors. He noted that the party lost direction because of leaders who were not in touch with members, and that the 2027 election window offers a chance to reclaim lost influence.
Other stakeholders, including Nnamdi Onyia and several dignitaries, urged members to remain faithful, saying loyalty is the path to future political reward. They expressed support for the committee and called on members to stay focused as the party plans to rebuild its presence in all 260 wards.
Many party members who attended the inauguration shared renewed hope that the caretaker committee would rebuild the PDP in Enugu and place it in a stronger position ahead of the next general elections.
