The Independent National Electoral Commission in Benue State has said it will stop the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise on December 10, 2025. The notice came from the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Sam Egwu, through a statement released in Makurdi, explaining how the suspension will take place and what the public should expect next.
The first phase of the registration began on August 25, 2025, and will be put on hold to allow the commission carry out the next part of the process. After the suspension, INEC will place the preliminary register of voters on display in all local government area offices as well as the state office. The display will run from December 15 to December 21, 2025, giving eligible voters time to check their details, correct any errors, or raise concerns about entries they believe should not be on the register.
The display period is meant to help the commission clean up the register before the next stage of registration opens. Prof. Egwu also stated that the second phase of the voter registration exercise will begin on January 5, 2026.
He urged political groups, civil society bodies, community leaders, and residents to keep to the schedule and make use of the opportunity to update their voter information. INEC repeated its commitment to keeping the register open, clear, and ready ahead of coming elections.
