Prof Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially announced her bid for the 2027 Ogun State governorship. She made the announcement during an interview with Nigerian sports legend Segun Odegbami on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports in Abeokuta on Saturday.
The former Commissioner confirmed that she will not be returning to the Senate or her previous political positions, stating that her focus is solely on contesting for the governorship seat. Iyabo Obasanjo joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of her campaign, responding to calls from supporters who have encouraged her to return to politics.
According to sources, she has been approached by a group of supporters who have been rallying for her candidacy over the past year. This push influenced her decision to re-engage in politics and run for the state’s top political office.
Iyabo Obasanjo’s entry adds a high-profile figure to the Ogun governorship contest, signaling a renewed level of interest and competition ahead of the 2027 elections. Her campaign is expected to follow APC’s party structures and guidelines as she begins preparations to secure the governorship.
Her announcement comes as APC in Ogun continues to hold meetings and plan strategies for upcoming political activities, setting the stage for a competitive electoral season.
