The Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday confirmed Pastor Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State in Yenagoa following deliberations during plenary.
His confirmation came after lawmakers considered his nomination and gave their approval.
Akpe arrived at the Assembly complex accompanied by supporters who gathered to witness the process. Because he had previously served as Majority Leader of the House, members asked him to take a bow and leave in line with parliamentary custom reserved for former principal officers.
Before his nomination, Akpe served as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri. Over the years, he has held several positions within the state government.
He worked as Head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor and later became a commissioner in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission.
He also served as Leader of the House in the Assembly. In addition, he held roles as Deputy Chief of Staff and Acting Chief of Staff at the Government House.
Akpe holds a doctorate degree in Administration and Planning from the University of Port Harcourt. Outside politics, he is a pastor and lectures part-time at the Redeemed Christian Bible College, University of Ede, Osun State.
He is from Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, the same local government area as his predecessor.
His appointment follows the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. Ewhrudjakpo collapsed in his office in December 2025 while carrying out official duties and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
After initial treatment, he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit and later flown abroad for further medical care, where he was pronounced dead.
With the Assembly’s approval, Akpe now assumes office as deputy governor and is expected to support the governor in the administration of the state’s affairs.
