Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, received former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, at his residence in Kano on Monday. The meeting followed Gawuna’s resignation as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria’s Governing Board.
Gawuna, who had also formally left the All Progressives Congress, is expected to join the African Democratic Congress, aligning with Kwankwaso’s recent defection to the party. His resignation took immediate effect, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for political appointees to step down under the Electoral Act ahead of upcoming elections.
During the handover, Gawuna thanked the president for the opportunity to serve and assured that all responsibilities would be transferred properly. He described his tenure at the Federal Mortgage Bank as a chance to contribute to national development and said he would seek guidance in planning his next steps.
The meeting signals a shift in Kano’s political landscape as key figures prepare for the 2027 elections, with movements between parties indicating new alliances and potential power realignments.
