A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alwan Hassan, has said the party is facing a difficult situation following the defection of Rabiu Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Hassan made this known on Tuesday during a live programme on Arise Television, where he spoke about the political impact of Kwankwaso’s exit. He said the former presidential candidate had remained politically available since 2023 and has now found a new platform, which could affect the APC’s chances, especially in Kano State.
He explained that Kano remains a key state in national politics and warned that losing control of it again in the next election could create more problems for the ruling party. According to him, the party had already lost the state in the last general election and may face the same outcome if the current situation is not addressed.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in 2023, recently left his former political base and joined the ADC as preparations for the 2027 polls continue. His move is already drawing reactions from different political figures, with concerns about how it may reshape alliances and voter support.
Hassan also described Kwankwaso as a strong political force in Kano, noting that his influence in the state remains intact. He added that failing to secure Kano in future elections could weaken the APC’s position at the national level.
The development comes as political parties begin early moves and alignments ahead of the next general elections, with attention now focused on key figures and states that could decide the outcome of the race.
