In Ekiti State on Monday, the All Progressives Congress announced how it plans to select candidates for National Assembly elections ahead of 2027, stating that direct primaries will be used if consensus among aspirants cannot be reached.
The party, through its state leadership, made this known in Ado Ekiti while addressing ongoing concerns about alleged endorsements and the selection process.
The development followed rising speculation that some aspirants had already been backed by top party figures, a situation that many feared could block others from contesting.
Responding to this, the party clarified that no aspirant would be denied the opportunity to test their popularity among members, regardless of any perceived endorsement.
The State Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, explained that all aspirants have been directed to engage party members directly across their constituencies. He added that the party remains committed to a fair process as outlined in its constitution, making it clear that consensus would only apply where all parties involved agree.
This position aligns with earlier views expressed by Biodun Oyebanji, Kayode Fayemi, Segun Oni, and Adeniyi Adebayo, who have all maintained that no aspirant has been officially endorsed. They have consistently advised contestants to rely on their achievements and connect with party members instead of depending on political backing.
Earlier, Fayemi had warned aspirants against avoiding primaries, noting that anyone seeking elective office should be ready to face a transparent internal election. He also cautioned that ignoring party rules could lead to disputes and legal challenges after the primaries.
The party further stated that while consensus remains an option, it cannot be imposed where disagreements exist. In such cases, direct primaries will serve as the alternative, allowing party members to decide who represents them at the polls.
The APC added that it is focused on maintaining internal democracy and ensuring equal opportunity for all contestants. It also urged aspirants to avoid spreading false claims about endorsements and instead follow laid-down guidelines.
With preparations ongoing, the party believes this approach will reduce tension, give all aspirants a fair chance, and strengthen its chances in the coming elections.
