Pressure is building on Benjamin Kalu to join the 2027 governorship race in Abia State as more groups and leaders declare support for his potential candidacy.
The latest backing came from stakeholders in the Ngwa area, a key political bloc in the state, where community leaders identified him as their preferred choice for governor. Their support was made public during a political gathering that also featured the launch of a movement and the declaration of another aspirant for a federal seat under the All Progressives Congress.
Kalu, who attended the event, spoke about the current administration led by Bola Tinubu, stating that its policies have helped strengthen the ruling party across the country. He also said the party remains stable compared to others dealing with internal challenges.
While acknowledging the growing calls for him to run for governor, Kalu did not give a direct answer but indicated that he would make his decision known soon. He explained that he prefers to address the matter at a central gathering in Umuahia, where supporters from across the state can be present.
His increasing political activities and public engagements across different parts of Abia have raised speculation about his interest in the governorship race. He has also been active in grassroots mobilisation, building support in areas such as Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis.
